All Saints’ 1st and 2nd Grades Top 20% Nationally

First and second grade students at All Saints’ Episcopal School have a lot to be proud of.  Recently the school received the results of the standardized tests given to students in those grades, using the McGraw Hill CTB test – the same test that was used by Tennessee for TCAP testing prior to 2005 when the state changed to a test based on the Tennessee State Curriculum.  In total test score, the first grade scored at the 81.3 percentile and the second grade at the 83.3 percentile.  What this means for the second grade, for example, is this: of the thousands of second grade students across the country who took this test, only 16.6% scored higher than their class-wide average.

In specific areas, the first grade scored as follows: Reading 83.5, Language 80.0, Math 80.2 and Word Analysis 75.5.  Second grade scores read: Reading Composite 85.5, Language Composite 81.6, Math Composite 80.2, Spelling 89.7 and Word Analysis 83.6.  An individual second grade class, 2A, scored 91.7 in Language Mechanics, and another, 2B, scored a phenomenal 93.3 in Spelling.  Again, this means that only 6.6% of second graders nationwide scored higher than this class’ average in spelling.

“These incredible scores are a testament to the three components of education that we have working for us at All Saints’: outstanding teachers, small class sizes and supportive parents, said Steve Cash, Head of School.  “And, of course, we have to give some credit to our hardworking students, as well,” he added.  The four first and second grade teachers have a combined 92 years of teaching experience.

In other testing recently, 100% of the school’s fifth and eighth graders passed the TCAP writing assessment.  These are the only Kindergarten through eighth grade classes that take this test.  In addition, all eighth grade students passed the state Algebra Gateway test, and all seventh graders passed the Algebra Gateway practice test.

“As we work to continually improve and advance our curriculum, we hope that these scores will continue to rise,” said Nikki Wills, Admission Director at the school.  She added, “Recent efforts to align our curriculum with that of other excellent independent schools around the country have paid off.”

Next year, All Saints’, which includes students from 2-year-old preschool through eighth grade, will be celebrating its 40th year in operation.
