Dear Parents of All Saints’ Students:

Let me first tell you how excited I am about being at All Saints’ Episcopal School.  When I visited last Spring, I concluded that the strength of the academic program and the dedication of the teachers—factors essential for a good school—were in place so that it will be possible to continue the excellence of the institution during an interim year.  As I told the faculty, my first goal is to help us have a good year so that we can attract the best possible permanent head of school.

The enthusiasm and support of the parents are also strong positive factors at All Saints’.  I have been impressed by the number of people who have volunteered to help as needed.  That cooperative spirit among the parents is also a major indicator of the strength of a school. We are partners in the wonderful task of enabling our children to discover the joy of learning.

Although an interim year is not the time to initiate long range projects, we can make some important steps to further the school’s development.  The very nature of a school is that it is always seeking to improve and change is constant.  One important step we will take this year is to make some more scheduling differences among the various levels.  The addition of Mike McDonald will give us more capacity for student activities and focus on the total development of our students.  Finally, our visit by the team from SACS/SAIS in October is an important step for All Saints’ Episcopal School because it means we are making it possible to hold ourselves to higher standards.

Recently I attended a breakfast in which several people spoke about the benefits of living in this area.  Although I have only been here a week, I wanted to stand up and say, “Amen!”  East Tennessee is a lovely place.  You have built a strong school.  Let’s enjoy this year together.

Sincerely,

Clauston Jenkins

Interim Headmaster

PS:  If you would like to spend some time sharing your thoughts about the school with me, please call Charlotte Holland and schedule a time when we can get together.  I welcome such conversations.

Re:       Various Matters Related to the Opening of School

This memo is a combination of items.  Some represent information that new families need and returning families already know.  Some represent points that I want to make with all families.  Since I am as new as the newest family, I thought I would combine everything and try to give everyone some sense of how I approach things.

Keys to Successful Communication

We have many means of communication at ASES, but the key to successful communication is attitude.  If we base our communications on the concepts of civility, honesty and respect, then our working relationships will be effective no matter what technology we use.

School Website

We encourage parents to take advantage of the information available on our Website: www.allsaintsepiscopalschool.org

For the start of school parents can learn what school supplies they need from the site.

The “Current Page” exists solely for the purpose of informing parents about a gamut of items including dress code guidelines, lunch menus, upcoming events, the weekly newsletter and pictures from recent field trips.  From the home page: www.allsaintsepiscopalschool.org click on the link “Links for Enrolled Students and Parents”. Various portions of the Parent-Student Handbook are included on this page.

Parent in Touch” is an important link for parents from the current links page.  Parents of 3rd-8th grade students have individual accounts which allow access to view sixth week grades online, click on teacher names to email the teacher, and click on course names to view current homework assignments.

Information included on the website is not intended to replace hard copy but is intended to facilitate communication between the school and home.

A Word about Safety in Dropping Off and Picking Up

As we begin another year of school, let us all remember that no matter how rushed we are, no matter how frustrated we are, the safety of our children is of absolute utmost importance.  The guidelines for drop off and pick up procedure are as follows:

Parent Drop Off, Pick Up and Parking

Parents must arrange for dropping-off and picking-up their children each day.  The student data form filled out each year by every family indicates a list of adults who are authorized to provide transportation for each student. If someone not listed is to pick up your child, please notify the school office ahead of time.

Establishing organized and consistent traffic patterns on campus is crucial to the safety of our children.  Please observe the following instructions so that a timely and effective means of transporting students to and from school can be possible.

Drop Off: Pre-School Students

Enter campus at the Preschool entrance (farthest from Sugar Hollow Road).  Park in the Preschool end of the parking lot to escort your child into the building.  Leave by the Preschool entrance.

Drop Off:  K – 8 Students

Enter campus at the west entrance (closest to Sugar Hollow Road) and proceed to the right as you loop around in the side parking lot.  As you approach the sidewalk in front of the school, proceed to the farthest open space at the curb.  For safety reasons, please have your student exit your vehicle through the car doors on the right side (closest to the building).  When your student has left the car, proceed through the parking lot back out the west entrance.

DO NOT PARK your car along the curb next to the building.

If you wish to walk your K – 8 student into the building, please park in a designated parking place and enter the building through the main doors.

Pick Up Pre-School Students

Enter campus at the east entrance and park in the Preschool end of the parking lot.  After picking up your child from inside the building, leave campus using the Preschool entrance

Pick Up K – 8 Students

Enter campus at the west entrance and proceed to the right of the barriers.  As you approach the sidewalk in front of the school, proceed to the farthest open space at the curb.  Have your child enter your vehicle from the right side (closest to the building).  When your student is in the car, proceed through the parking lot back out the west entrance.  Please DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CAR UNATTENDED along the curb next to the building.

Dress Code

This year we are going to try to consistently enforce the dress code.  I make this point now because I want all of our students to be aware of this situation the first day of school.  Also, please remember that the fact that a student’s unchallenged violation of the code is not a license to violate the code.

Academic and Related Matters

Common Goals   Both parents and teachers have a common goal for our students at All Saints’ Episcopal School.  We want all students to work to the best of their ability.  We do not expect the same result; but we all desire the best effort.  More will be expected of students with more ability because we do not want our best students to become lazy.  There is substantial recent research that shows that students who are praised because they are smart do not do as well as those who are praised for their effort.  The “smart” children take the easy way and do not seek challenge.  The “hard working” children continue to seek challenge and thus continue to grow and learn.

Global Challenge    I have been fortunate to have lived through the transition from the national goods economy to the global knowledge economy.  In today’s world it matters greatly what you know, and the challenge we face in education is not in competing with the education of other states but in competing with the education of other nations that are in many cases working harder than we are to learn.  And the truth is that there is no end to learning over a lifetime.  At ASES we are building a foundation for your children and it is our belief that you want us to build the strongest foundation possible so that as they move forward in their education they have the abilities and habits that enable them to continue to learn.   A college student once asked Thomas Friedman, the author of The World is Flat, what he would suggest was the best way to prepare oneself for the flat world.  Tom Friedman thought a minute and then said, “Develop a joy of learning.”  It is my view that our greatest task is to ignite the joy of learning in each student here.

New Teacher  I am pleased to announce that our new Half Day Kindergarten teacher is Amy R. Davis, who has a Master of Arts in Teaching degree in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on K-8 and has previously taught in our Preschool program.  She and her husband, Jim, have two children.  Kamden, their oldest, will be in 4 year old preschool this year here at All Saints’.

Chapel   If we are as we say we are, a Christian school, then we should place chapel in a central place in our lives.  Chapel should be an integral part of our schedule and not seen as an add-on or something that we wedge into the rest of our busy schedule.  For this reason I have made the decision to make regular first period on Wednesdays the period devoted to chapel.  We will no longer have a different time schedule on Wednesdays.  Home room will meet as normal on Wednesdays and at first period the grades that normally attend chapel will go to chapel.  This is a change,  and it will mean some adjustment on the part of our teachers.  Since they are very good at accommodating unplanned changes in schedules, I am confident that they can make the necessary adjustments in this situation.

Homework   Homework is for students, not parents.  Parents who do homework for their children are preventing the students from learning or learning what they need to learn.  We have a policy that homework should not take more than one and a half hours a night.  I am asking the faculty to abide by this rule.  If your child consistently spends more than an hour and a half on homework, you should talk with the teachers.  I am asking the teachers to be flexible in these situations.

Helicopters Create Downdrafts   You see quite a bit in the press these days about Helicopter Parents—parents who continue to stay involved in their children’s lives even after they graduate from college.  In one reported instance a parent insisted on going on a job interview with a college graduate.  Clearly, the relationship between parents and students at the ages of our students must by necessity be much closer than at college.  Yet all of us need to be mindful that children learn the most when they resolve problems themselves.  It is often true that they learn the most from failure.  Admittedly, we have to strike a delicate balance in knowing when to get involved and when to allow our children work things out on their own.  Sometimes the downdraft from the helicopter keeps us from rising up.

Some Common Sense Points to Keep in Mind

  1. Praise builds self esteem when it is based on significant accomplishment.  The older you are, the more you have to accomplish to earn praise.  For this reason we praise our two year olds more than our eighth graders.  Children know when praise is unmerited.

  1. The learning curve varies for every child and it is difficult to predict how it will develop.  Teachers and parents need patience as well as dedication.  Sometimes there are no instant answers to questions about learning.

  1. Teachers are humans, not seers or clairvoyants.  They are devoted to doing the best they can to motivate every student to learn but they have no magic wand to make that happen.  Like scientific discovery, teaching and learning is a process of trial and error.

  1. All children need to learn how to get back up after they have fallen—both physically and mentally.  We call this quality “resilience,” and it is one of the most important lessons we can teach.  This is another way of saying we learn from our mistakes.

  1. A good school has a clean campus because the cleanliness shows that everyone in the community accepts responsibility for the appearance of the campus.

  1. Sometimes the truth hurts but that should not stop us from telling the truth at the appropriate time; but it takes time to learn that there is a time and place for everything, even the truth.  Successfully married couples know this well.

I look forward to seeing you soon and to working with you this year.  May we all enjoy our quest for the joy of learning.

Today’s Highlights

                                                                  SEE DETAIL

From the Head of School

As a new member of the Morristown community I sometimes see things from a different perspective.  One of my great joys this summer has been to walk out of the school building at the end of the day and take in the beautiful view of the hills in the distance before me.  It is something we do not have at the beach.  The other day as I looked out at the vista it occurred to me that enjoyment of the view is a good parallel for the academic year we are beginning.  At times during the year we are tempted to look at small things that may have only temporary significance instead of remembering that our goal is the long range development of our children.  So this year when you are tempted to get frustrated over some small problem remember to look up and take in the larger horizon of the comprehensive development of our students over the entire academic year.  In the evening the view from our front door is wonderful and in May we can think about the joy of the development we have seen in your children since August.

Welcome New Faculty

One strength of All Saints’ Episcopal School is illustrated by the stability of our faculty.  This year we welcome three new teachers and one teacher who has moved from part-time to full-time.  The new teachers are:  Ellie Maben in Preschool; Amy Davis who is teaching half day Kindergarten; and Mr. Gene Quarles who is teaching Algebra 1 in the 8th grade.  Moving from part-time to full-time is Mike McDonald.  We are pleased with these new additions to our school family, and we are proud that our good teachers elect to remain with us year after year.

Driving Safety on Campus

At times our parking lot becomes very congested, especially during pick up and drop off periods.  I would ask that everyone driving on campus observe the following, please:

Thank you for doing your part to make this a safe campus.

Building Opening and Closing Times

The school building opens at 7:40 a.m. and no student should be in the building until then . unless the student is signed up for Before Care.  Similarly, at the end of the school day, no student should be in the building after 4:00 p.m. unless the student is enrolled in After Care, working with a specific teacher or participating in a supervised school activity.

The doors of the school building will be locked at 4:00 p.m.  Access to the gym after 4 p.m. will be through the rear door by the playground.

Changes in Kitchen Access for Students

After they put their lunches up in the morning students will not be allowed in the kitchen except between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.  If they bring snacks, students should keep them in their lockers or homeroom because they will not be allowed access to the kitchen to pick up snacks.

Parents Class Night

Next Monday, August 20th from 7 to 9 p.m. we will have a new event at All Saints’.  Parents Class Night is designed to give you a chance to hear the teachers of core subjects describe what they plan to do this year and how best to communicate with them.  This event is intended to give parents an opportunity to talk with the teachers about the year ahead.

As an incentive for attending, we will distribute the Parent/Student Handbook and Directory at the meeting.  The evening will begin at 7 p. m. with a general session in Coffman Activity Center for all parents.  Students should not attend Parents Class Night.

Volleyball

The girls’ volleyball team, coached by Renee McGarel wants all girls in the 5th through 8th grade to come out for the team.  First practice is Tuesday, August 14th from after school until 5 p.m.  For more information call Renee McGarel (748-1938) or talk to Mrs. Coffey.

Plan Ahead for a Fun Evening with the Eagles

At All Saints’ Episcopal Church on Wednesday, September 12th at 5:30 p.m. Karen Wilbur, Wildlife Coordinator for the American Eagle Foundation, will be the speaker and share many very interesting stories about each of these birds. A Bald Eagle and other birds of prey such as a Golden Eagle, several Owls, Hawks, and even a Vulture will be the Wednesday program.
The American Bald Eagle is our nation's Symbol for Freedom which allows us among other things to worship in our own way. This is an opportunity for young and old alike to see up close and witness flight of some of the most powerful birds of prey in our country and also enjoy a great meal for only $7 per person or a family of 4 for only $22.  This exiting dinner will be served promptly at 5:30 PM at the church.

Today’s Highlights

Thanks PTSO

Thanks to the PTSO for the picnic on Friday.  All who attended enjoyed the food and fellowship.

Directories Distributed

The 2007-08 Parent/Student Handbook and Directory is being sent home with the students this week.  Each family receives one copy.  This is the earliest the directories have been distributed in anyone’s memory.  Special thanks to Charlotte Holland and Jamie Carpenter who put in many extra hours to complete this project.

Volleyball Team Wins.

The volleyball teams played Jefferson Middle on Friday where both the JV and varsity teams came out on top.  The JV won 15-10, 15-4.  Katherine Harville helped the girls to victory by serving 11 points in the match.  She also added 2 more in the varsity game.  Erin McGarel was tough on defense as well as serving.  The varsity won 25-16, 25-16.  Alison Krenzer was the match high server with 13 points.  All of the girls played very well and should be very proud.

The volleyball team opened their season earlier in the week with a tough match against White Pine school.  The JV split their match 25-21 and 12-15.  Abby McGarel led the team in serving with 9 points.  Anna Branham, Elissa House, and Shelby Pollock, who are all new to the team this year, played a great first match.  The varsity team lost 17-25, 6-25.  Madeleine Young served tough and Megan McGarel played well at the net.

The team plays White Pine away Tuesday at 4pm and Rush Strong at home on Thursday at 5pm.  Come out and support the team.

Completed Forms Due by Friday

It is essential that we have the completed safety, medical and notification information for each student by Friday, August 31st.  All parents now have copies of the forms.  Please provide this important information.

Cub Scout Information on Wednesday

On Wednesday after Chapel there will be a presentation for all boys interested in Cub Scouts.

Scheduling Appointments with Teachers

Our teachers are happy to meet with parents but they cannot have significant discussions about individual students as they are attending to all the matters related to the beginning or ending the school day.  Parents are encouraged to use email to schedule an appointment with a teacher.  This approach represents the most effective use of everyone’s time and avoids the frustration of trying to carry on a conversation while dealing with many other students who are arriving and leaving class.

Making Pickup Work Smoother

In the afternoon when picking up, if you know your child will be late, it is best to park in the parking lot rather than at the curb.

Aftercare Reminder

Please remember that children who come to Aftercare should bring a snack.

Greetings

We like to begin the morning at All Saints’ with a smile and a greeting.  To that end I stand inside the building and greet the students as they enter.  To avoid the awkwardness of the heavy door, we simply prop it open at 7:40 when the building opens so that no students have to struggle with it.  One of the things some of us have noticed is that a number of students seem reluctant to respond when we say “Good Morning.”  Please remind your children how courtesy extends to a polite response to a morning greeting.

Another way we are trying to create a friendly environment is through a project Coach McDonald is undertaking with the 5th through 8th graders.  They are asking 4 volunteers each day to help the younger students at curbside and in Coffman Activity Center.  With this approach we should make the beginning of school less intimidating and begin to form ties between the older and younger students.

Clarification of Morning Times

A New Manifestation of our Honor System

A number of strong independent schools like ASES have honor codes.  Many of these schools are larger than we are and yet they have no locks on their lockers.  During Honor Week we began what we hope will be a new tradition by disabling the locks on the 4th grade lockers. (Since they are built in we cannot take them off.) We will gradually implement this change so that in the end we will not use the locks on our lockers.  We believe our students can accept the responsibility of living with this aspect of the Honor Code.

Tennis

All Saints has two tennis teams—a B team and a C team.  The letters refer to competitive levels of play.  Both teams play in Knoxville.  The B team plays on Tuesdays and the C team plays on Mondays. Practice this week is today, Tuesday, September 4th at 4:30 - 6:00, at the Country Club; no practice Thursday.   Practice next week is Thursday, Sept 13th, 4:30-6:00. Both teams' first match is next week (10th -C and 11th -B)

 Music, Music, Music

The 2nd Grade will be participating in the National Anthem Project Sep12th with MENC the National Music Educators' special plan where participating schools across the country receive certificates upon completion of singing it all together at the same time. The project involves not only learning to sing the Star Spangled Banner but its history, its meaning today and patriotism. Students who can, are encouraged to look up interesting facts on the web.

3rd Grade is forming a Recorder Choir. Please send your order forms a.s.a.p.  to the Music Room, # 108.

Volleyball Results

On Tuesday August 28th at White Pine School, the JV continued their winning streak by winning 21-12, 21-19.  Erin McGarel and Shelby Pollock were strong on serving with 7 and 6 points respectively.  Elissa House played aggressively.  The varsity team lost a tough match that went to 3 games 13-25, 25-19, 11-15.  Megan McGarel served the match high with 9 points and Chloe Pollock worked hard for the Lady Golden Eagles.

The team played at home on Thursday evening against Rush Strong and the JV again came out on top winning 15-9, 15-9.  Anna Branham played a strong game and Katherine Harville served 8 points for the victory.  The varsity team lost another tough match 18-25, 21-25.  Even though they lost, Coach McGarel was impressed with their net play and spiking.  Keep up the good work.

Girl Scouts

Girl Scout Troup 739 will be meeting Friday, September 7th at 3:30 in the art room.  Any young woman interested in joining Girl Scouts is invited to attend.  For additional information call Heather Livesay at 586-5912 or 327-3682.

HIGHLIGHTS

Thanks teachers and parents for a great Middle School Retreat.

Remember to send in deposit for Spring middle school trip to NYC.

Plan now to attend our Auction on Friday, November 30th.

What Makes Our School Special

We need look no further than this newsletter to find good evidence of why All Saints’ Episcopal School is special.

First, we thank Jim Claborn for his leadership in creating the Middle School Retreat last week.  It was, as one teacher noted, an experience that allowed our students to grow in ways that extend far beyond classroom knowledge.  The efforts that Mr. Claborn devotes to this event represent an extraordinary commitment to this school.  We thank him for all that he does for us.  He shows the difference committed faculty make in a school.  Jim would be the first to insist that many others contributed to the success of the event and that is true; but the fact is that he the catalyst.  The best way to summarize the benefits of the retreat is to read the unsolicited comment of a parent who attended. “It was such a pleasure to observe our students at Wesley Woods on the middle school retreat.  The activities such as the Blueberry Hike, climbing walls, archery, ropes courses, rappelling and rock wall climbing, night hikes, campfire stories and singing along with the ORT program were outstanding.  The exercises were ‘challenge by choice’, and I was so proud being able to witness the students step out of their comfort zones and try new experiences and display their courage and faith.   While some students were able to fully execute and accomplish an entire course, others were able to make attempts and push themselves one step beyond where they believed they could reach.   Congrats to all who seized this opportunity to utilize our abundant resources and be good stewards of our many blessings.”

Second, middle school parents received notice about the need for a deposit for the Middle School Trip to New York City (due Wednesday, September 12th) in order to ensure the best opportunities for our 5th through 8th grade students who will go on the trip next spring..  Planning for the trip is being led by Angie Smith.  She has spent countless hours working on getting the best arrangements at prices we can afford.  All of this effort has been in addition to her devotion to her classroom duties.  Again, she represents the type of faculty who make this school special.  Like her colleagues, she devotes many extra hours to ensuring our students have the best educational experience possible.

Third, the Auction on November 30th represents an example of the difference our committed parents make at All Saints’.  By the actual date of the auction our parents will have devoted untold hours in putting together a successful event.  The number of details that must be handled is mind boggling, but our parents provide the leadership and hard work that guarantee a fun and successful event.  The net proceeds from the auction go directly towards retiring our debt and the event is our single most important fundraiser of the year.

HIGHLIGHTS

New Head of School Appointed

On Friday the Board of Trustees accepted the recommendation of the Search Committee and voted to appoint Henry G. Selby as the new permanent Head of School.  He has accepted our offer.  He will begin his duties at ASES next summer after he finishes the school year at his current school.

The Board of Trustees will mail all parents a letter containing additional information about Mr. Selby and his family.

The ASES community owes a very enthusiastic “Thank You” to the search committee that was so ably led by Mr. Jack Fishman.  Members of the committee were: Chair, Jack Fishman, Jamie Carpenter, Pastor Scherry Fouke, Bill Hale, Dr. Raymond Lowry, Renee McGarel, Dr. Gregg Perry, and Lindy Potter.

Congratulations and Thanks, PTSO

A huge thanks to all of the parents who baked for, or worked at the bake sale last Friday and Saturday at the All Saints’ Episcopal Church BBQ.  Our goal was to earn enough to purchase a new climbing play set for the pre-school playground.  We made over $1200 which is more than enough to purchase the play set and buy some things for the upper school as well.  With this kind of community support we build momentum to welcome our new head of school.

Reminder: School Starts at 8:00a.m.

Students should be at school in their homeroom at 8:00 a.m.  Too many people are acting as if school does not start until 8:10.  We use the ten minutes to deal with school business in the homerooms and to get the students ready to begin work.  We are losing academic time when students arrive after 8 a.m.

We hope that this reminder is effective in changing the arrival patterns of those who are now getting to school after 8 a.m.  We will monitor the situation and if there is no change, on November 5th we will take action to apply consequences to those who arrive after 8 a.m.  If we take that next step, students who are tardy more than 2 times in any grading period will not be eligible for inclusion on the Honor Roll for that grading period.

Congratulations to the Student Volleyball Team

The student volleyball team managed to defeat an inspired faculty team in a challenge match last Wednesday, but it took them three games.  The faculty using “relaxed rules” (something akin to “relaxed fix” jeans that the faculty knows so well) managed to win one of the three games.  It was only with a decisive win in the tie-breaker third game that the students secured their victory and the spoils that go to the winner—a free dress day.  Most faculty survived the competition intact and we did not have to call EMS.

Free Dress Day

Friday, October 19th will be the free dress day won by the students.

Study Hall for Basketball Participants

When basketball practices begin, the practice schedules sometime mean that some students have a gap between the end of school and the beginning of practice.  Parents and students should be clear about one fact.  Students cannot just “hang out” on campus waiting for practices to begin.  They must be with parents off campus or in some supervised activity at school.  Parents and students have three choices:  They can leave school and return for practice.  They can go to aftercare.  They can take advantage of a special study hall being offered by Mrs. Coffey.

Parents interested in the study hall for students waiting for practices should contact Mrs. Coffey directly.  Arrangements for payment for the study hall should be made with Mrs. Coffey.

Saving Silver –A Real Reason for Thanksgiving

Our Saving Silver program under the direction of the Honor Council seeks to use the proceeds we collect for helping others.  One of our recipients is a seriously ill young lady, Samantha Dean, whom we are helping to achieve her fondest wish by having dinner with Cinderella in her castle in Disney World.  She has just received the best present of all and learned from her latest tests that her cancer is dormant.

Her trip to Disney World is set for the first of December and, in addition to a financial contribution of $500 to help with her expenses, the Honor Council is planning a party for her here at school on Wednesday, November 28th.

We plan to make this a festive occasion and a special day for Samantha.  Our plans include a red carpet entrance, a Cinderella throne for her, and students dressed as Disney characters.  Anyone interested in helping with the decorating should contact Coach Mike or Angie Smith.

On this day students dressed as Disney characters may wear costumes, otherwise the dress code is in effect.

Parents are welcome to attend.

We thank everyone for their contributions to Saving Silver that helped make this special day possible and remind our students to continue to support the program through the donation of their loose silver in the containers in their home rooms.
